Festivals are celebration time for the Millennium family. Being in a country like India, we are all charged up at such times. All the boys and girls right from nursery, do the dahi handi on Gokulashtami, they decorate the school and make lanterns and lamps in Diwali. Kindergarteners have a Bhondla too. For Christmas, they make decorations, sing the traditional songs and have a Santa and a tree! The children even mould and paint statues during Ganpati.
All round exposure and development is what we strive for. We make it compulsory for every child to make an appearance on the stage as that is the only way to tackle stage fright. They anchor the entire annual gathering and present dances and plays on the stage. The props and drapery is all provided by the school and the gathering goes on for almost a week as each child has at least one performance on stage. They are trained to speak on the stage, dance and act during the school year. In fact, this is even allowed to be pursued as a special activity from the eighth standard onwards.
Excursions and field trips are also planned during the school year. The children are taken to museums, historical places, forts or factories. This helps the children obtain firsthand experience of things that they learn about in the curriculum. It is a fantastic experience and provides for fond memories later on.
For teacher’s day, each student of the 10th standard chooses a role to play – right from attendants and office helpers to teachers, co-ordinators and Dr. Phatak himself. Students then dress up and take over and manage the entire school for that day. Children of other classes have to treat them as authorities and the ‘staff’ has to command respect too. It is an interesting experience for the 10th standard no doubt, but we think the real staff enjoys it even more!
There are various competitions during the school year – like drawing, craft, posters, handwriting, essay writing, elocution, debate, monologue, fancy dress etc. Children actively participate in these and also help organize the events.
Republic Day and Independence Day are celebrated in the school too. Children march, sing patriotic songs and salute the national flag. We have a sports week, a fun fair and a science exhibition too. All in all, the whole year is quite eventful at Millennium.
